Walking the Dogs on a Spring Evening

by James Brush on April 14th, 2011 | 6 Comments

something about the moon
the orange evening sky
the way houses
become blocks of shadow
the jingling of the dogs’ leads,
their rabies tags
the hiss and whirr of sprinklers
a man watering the lawn,
hose in one hand, a cigarette
and beer in the other
that orange sky
mockingbirds singing slower
bats swarming just above the trees
a deer watching from the trail
ears twitching
the dogs leading us home
as they have for millennia
and that waxing moon
again and again

Talk about sensory overload. This is wonderful. I’m on the walk! I love the almost list effect which gives the effect of walking, of moving through the poem with the walker.

I’m so glad to find your blog through Namopowrite. Your images of Western places evoke freedom and restlessness in me. I especially likee your moon waxing again and again. I’ve bee nenjoying watching it increase in size this warming month.

Thank you, Victoria, and thanks for visting. I’ve long been fascinated by the west, though I live on the very eastern edge of it, some of my favorite times have been the many trips taken through AZ, NM, and CO.
