Weekend Hound Blogging: The Calm Before the Bark

There’s that moment just before a dog barks when you can see it in his eyes.
It’s going to happen.
You know he’s going to bark.
He knows you know he’s about to bark.
It’s like he’s saying, “It’s dinner time. We can do this easy way… or the loud way.”
‘Round here, we seem to opt for the loud way.

Friday Hound Blogging: One Pillow, No Growling

Sometimes Joey has to growl when the others get too close while he’s sleeping, but sometimes, he shares. Phoebe knows what a privilege this is and so she remains very very still.

Friday Hound & Cat Blogging: Ummm…

Hey, Simon, watch where you’re pointing that thing.
(Yes, we will go for the low joke here at Coyote Mercury.)

Friday Hound Blogging: Greyt Dogs Indeed
The pups are tired today and don’t feel like starring in the blog. Instead, they direct you to a recent article on CNN.com about people who save the lives of greys and how those greys help save the lives of other dogs:
A group of 55 greyhounds rescued after a life of racing are helping to save more canine lives with the donation of their blood.
The dogs, most owned by professors, technicians and students at the Ohio State University veterinary school, visit the school several times a year to give blood.
Greyhounds represent the bulk of the donors, and with good reason because they typically have a universal blood type that any dog can receive.
Greyhounds also have big neck veins that make drawing blood easy, said veterinarian Guillermo Couto, who works with the animal blood donor program at OSU.
They have big hearts too.

Friday Hound Blogging: Now? What About Now?

Using only cuteness to communicate, Daphne requests dinner and, perhaps, a lick of ale.

Friday Monday Hound Blogging: Fishy-eye Joe
Now that my hosting issue is resolved, I can blog again! Here’s last Friday’s Hound Blogging on Monday. Who says Monday must be all bad?

There’s something fishy about that new lens. Joey trusts it even less than a regular one.

Friday Hound Blogging: Daphne and the Little Pups

Over the years, shy Daphne and has become more doglike. Over Thanksgiving she surprised everyone. My in-laws came and brought their two puppies, (Special Guest Pups) Henry and Lucy. Henry is the little(er) one…

While Joey watched suspiciously and stayed out of the way (it’s hard to see exactly what those little things zipping around all the way down there are) and Phoebe slept, it was Daphne who bounced around and played - yes, played - with the puppies.
She chased ‘em, she dropped at ‘em, she even grabbed a toy and attacked it to show what she’s capable of.
Daphne. Played. With a toy.
It’s hard to believe this is the same dog I once had to pick up and carry (all 55 pounds of her) to the backyard to do her business.
Greyhounds carry baggage heavier than most dogs. It’s good to see Daphne leaving more and more of it behind.

Friday Hound Blogging: ‘Tis Sweet to Hear the Crazy-Eyed Barker

“‘Tis sweet to hear the watch-dog’s honest bark
Bay deep-mouthed welcome as we draw near home;
‘Tis sweet to know there is an eye will mark
Our coming, and look brighter when we come.”
- Lord Byron, “A Friendly Welcome”

Friday Hound Blogging: A Toothsome Grin

Joey got his tooth sharpened cleaned today, which also meant a nice car ride along I-35, listening to the audiobook version of Frank McCourt’s Teacher Man. He seemed to enjoy the ride and the entertainment, though there wasn’t enough eating or peeing on trees in the book to hold his attention for long.
