Was the Playstation Broken?

Last week’s Old Photo Friday lamented the passing of the one-day-only lemonade stands once run by enterprising young urchins out to make a bit of summer coin.

Today, I stand corrected.

While on my way back from driving a carload of cardboard to our local recycling facility, I came across three boys standing at a neighborhood intersection selling powdered high fructose corn syrup mixed with water. For fifty cents, the concoction is served up in a nice styrofoam cup with three ice cubes.

I bought a round and then headed home where I dumped it after a few sips. Too sweet. Still, it’s nice to see that some of the summer traditions of my youth still exist, rare though they may be.

  1. I took the kids to the playground the other day. It’s about three long blocks east of us, but an easy trip, especially when they ride their scooters.

About 3/4 of the way down the street, a young girl was selling ‘Juleps’ for fifty cents.

She had her stand on the front porch of their house, with her daddy (I’m assuming) sitting on the swing a few feet away. She watched us hopefully as we scooted past her.

If the kids hadn’t been so far ahead of me, I would have stopped and bought one. Or two or three.

We went back the next day, and she wasn’t there.

Hopefully, she’ll open her stand again some day.

Those little entrepreneurs in our subdivision charge $1.00 a Dixie cup – like the teeny tiny ones kids have in their bathrooms. Boy, have prices gone up! BTW – I emailed you some recipes in response to Los Brushes – please forward to your better half. Cheers.

  3. I’m glad to hear that y’alls neighborhoods also have the occasional entrepreneur.

50 cent juleps sound pretty good, too.
