The adventures of greyhounds and cats around the house.

Weekend Hound Blogging: Tripping the Mouth Daphtastic

We’ve been having work done on our floors this week, so we’ve had to send the pups to doggy daycare. Joey and Phoebe go twice a week, but Daphne has never gone. In the past we’ve tried to board her, and she spent the whole time cowering in a corner panting.

Not anymore. The new Daphne runs and plays with the other dogs. The new Daphne likes to go to daycare. I suspect it’s partially the influence of Joey, who also likes to run and play with other dogs. Still, it’s amazing that after four and a half years, our little spook is still learning to be a dog, taking mostly baby steps, but sometimes full greyhound strides.

Go, Daphne.

And cheers to The Family Guy for this little exchange (paraphrasing):

Stewie (the baby): You’ll wind up in a dumpster with a bunch of unwanted greyhounds.

Brian (the alcoholic dog): Hey, that’s not funny! That’s our holocaust!

Weekend Hound Blogging: Ice, Ice, Phoebe

Phoebe discovered her new favorite treat last week: fresh icicles.

I broke one off to see what she would do, and she carried it off a few feet and then bit it into a rain of shards. Then the real fun started, namely trying to pick the pieces up again. She kept working at it until she figured out how to do it at which point she ate all of them.

I broke another off for her and she ate that too. It wasn’t long before the porch was littered with icicles and Phoebe was shivering from the cold as she ate them. Eventually, I got her inside where she warmed up and then wanted to go back out to eat some more.

Icicles, the ultimate dog treat. They’re free, non fattening, provide a challenge, aren’t a choking hazard. Your pup will love ’em.

Weekend Hound Blogging: Holding Down the Couch

This couch ain’t goin’ nowhere.

Let’s see, moving from left to right…

On Friday, Phoebe ate some CD jewel box. It seemed to be pretty tasty, but that meant I had to induce vomiting. The last time we played that game, I measured out her dose in tablespoons (while she talked of Michelangelo), which meant she had a chance to flee while I refilled. This time I loaded the full dose of H2O2 into a baster and got it all in at once. She immediately threw up her dinner along with the sharp pieces of plastic. She seems to have forgiven me.

Joey is now off his trancs. He’s doing fine and there have been no changes in his personality. He’s been sober for six days now.

Daphne is, as always, a good girl. She’s working on her sleeping and well on her way to perfecting the art of the nap.

Weekend Hound Blogging: A Morning Cup and Joe

Joey always has trouble focusing before my first cup of coffee.

And speaking of drugs, he’s down to a quarter of his dose of tranquilizers and doing great. We’re going to have him completely off the junk by Tuesday.

Weekend Hound Blogging: Houndspotting

Joey came to us an addict. He takes tranquilizers for his anxiety, but we’ve been trying to ween him off. He’s down to half his dose of junk and, so far, no dead puppies have been seen crawling across the ceiling. He’s a few weeks away from his final hit, but I think he’ll be fine without it.

Of course, there’s final hits and then there’s final hits, but in the meantime using Phoebe as a pillow is a good way to relax.

Weekend Hound Blogging: Like a Band of Gypsies

For Thanksgiving we packed up the pups and drove to Orange where my in-laws live. It’s about 300 miles from Austin, right where the Louisiana border and the Gulf coast come together.

It was Joey’s first road trip, and we wondered how he would fare. He loves the car and the drive was fine, but he was nervous when we got to my grandmother-in-law’s house. There were a lot of people who all wanted to meet him, which kind of freaked him out, but he rose to the occasion and showed off with some precision peeing in the front yard before going in to inspect the couches. They met with his approval.

Over the next few days, Joey settled in just fine and expanded his fan base to include the golden triangle.

Weekend Hound Blogging: Petey Melt

Meet special guest pup, Petey…

Petey came to visit yesterday. It was the first time Joey and Phoebe have had canine company, and they seemed to enjoy having a new friend. Even Daphne joined the fun until she grew bored after five minutes.

In the backyard, Petey tried to see if Joey could block his shot…

and then he came inside and ran in circles until he melted and turned into butter.
